Danish String vintage Beech Wood chairs by Niels Jørgen Haugesen for Tranekaer Furniture.
Niels Jørgen Haugesen was born in Denmark in 1936. And worked with many notable Danish designers including Arne Jacobsen. He set up his own design studio in 1971 and between 1980-1995 he worked in partnership with Gunvor Haugesen. Niels Jørgen Haugesen produced numerous designs for Bent Krogh A/S (featured in the Danish Museum of Applied Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York) but their most recognizable design is the String chair produced for Tranekaer Furniture. Tranekaer began production in the 1974 and represented the new wave of Danish designers whilst still producing high end furniture for both Hans J. Wegner and Kurt Østervig.
These chairs have a Beech wood frame with charcoal fabric upholstered seats. The minimal, modernist style frame is complemented with an angular detail to the seat and armrest. The back support is made of an interwoven graphic pattern of nylon strings that actually offers very comfortable support. Produced in the 1980’s the chairs are in good vintage condition with just few marks to the frames here and there and also feature the original maker’s mark under the seat as shown. You’ll also see from one of the pictures that two chairs have a stitched detail line across the front of the seat pad and the other two don’t. They are all however, made from the same colour and weave of material so this little detail is hardly noticeable in use – just thought it was worth mentioning.
