Robert Kjer Jakobsen was born in Portland, Oregon, on March 8, 1918 and from 1949-1985, he was chief designer of the Los Angeles furniture company, Virtue Brothers. He created many designs using square chrome tube and amongst which his directors chairs stand out as the most recognised and most beautiful. As such the chairs were featured in the 1969 issue of California Design Ten book on page 46 and this led to the chairs being used on the set of numerous Hollywood movies at that time – they were after all designed as director’s chairs!

The chairs have a truly beautiful sinuous structure which creates a wonderful symmetry of curves and angles when you see a set together – one chair is great, but many is better! There’s a sort of dynamic that comes from how they combine together as a set; as can hopefully be seen in the pictures.

I can also state unequivocally that these are the best remaining set of 6 of these chairs that you will ever see. All the Naugahyde seats and backs as well as the chrome frames are in great condition and there’s not a damaged joint or missing piece to be found - save one label from the 6 that’s missing on the base of one seat.

All in all a truly iconic set of American design history, and in great condition too!

20th Century Design Soft Furnishings Policy

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989 and 1993) state that all soft furnishings holding foam must conform to BS5852 standards. This means that any post-1988 furniture will need to bear a fire label for auction and 2nd hand sale purposes.

The following exceptions apply:
• Items constructed pre-1950 [Regulation 4(a)]
• Items being sold to someone who is in the business of reupholstering furniture [See Regulation 4[b] and Consumer Protection Act 1987, s.46(7)]
• Items being sold to someone who is in the business of dealing in
furniture [Regulation 14(1)]
• Items being sold that will not be used in a domestic setting in the UK e.g. for export, for use in a museum or theatre, as a work of art [Regulation 3(1a) and 4(c)]

Soft furnishings for sale on this website are therefore sold as collector’s items and are not intended for private use – and in buying any item from this website you understand this. Further you accept all risks and liabilities that may arise from your purchase. They may not be in compliance with the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) Regulations 1988 and should be re-upholstered to conform to BS 5852 prior to any use in a domestic dwelling.
