A set of Norman Cherner designed bar stools in Oak veneered plywood with chrome bases and vinyl back pads.
 
Originally designed in 1958 these Norman Cherner bar stools echo many of the features that Cherner was famous for. These include the innovative use of graduated plywood to create strength but also beauty in how the form of his chairs and stools were sculpted to create gently curving shapes and contours.
 
The chairs are not labelled but I believe them to be originals based on a number of factors: the thickness and contour of the swan neck back support, the fixing base plate and leg anchor screws and also the vinyl upholstered back. The latter in particular appears to be exclusive to licensed Cherner designs which offered a bespoke service that allowed customers to choose the basic model and add upholstered backs (either front only or front and back) and a choice of upholstered seat - on that basis you won’t find a company in the marketplace selling reproductions with upholstery options like this. The shape has changed over the years, so the ‘V’ shape of the back upholstery design would date these particular chairs to around the 1980s which would also fit with the usage marks on each chair.
 
They are presented in good vintage condition with signs of use in a few places around the front edge of the seat and on the legs, just as you would expect. None detract from the overall look and use of the stools and, in any event, the items are priced with this in mind.
 
Please do note the height of these chairs as you would need a counter top or breakfast bar of the right height to accommodate them.
