Rare Danish Mid Century Arne Jacobsen 3501 coffee table for Fritz Hansen
 
Arne Jacobsen is one of the Godfathers of Danish design having created one ground breaking design after another. Being an architect by trade also enabled him to stand out from his contemporaries allowing him to be open to experimentation with less traditional  furniture making materials such as metal and fibreglass. This allowed him to craft objects in ways that had never been seen before spanning both the concepts of minimalistic structure and form and the more esoteric and exciting sculptural beauty seen in the curvature and soft line of his iconic Egg chair.
 
The 3501 table is a perfect example of his minimalist approach and an examination of using both wood and metal in the same design. The table top floats within a simple frame almost like a piece of artwork offering a rich depth of colour against the contrast of the polished steel. It’s also quite a rare beauty as the 3501 was believed to have only been produced for a matter of 5-7 years from around 1956 – 63.
 
This example of the 3501 dates from the earlier period around the late 50’s, as can be evidenced by the markings underneath the table which are indicative of furniture produced by FH at that time, (later models had stickers). It’s not in perfect condition and this is intentional. I could have sanded it back to remove all the marks but I personally believe a piece of furniture of this age and simplistic beauty should wear its history not as scars to be airbrushed out but as a reminder of the 60 years of enjoyment it has given whoever has been lucky enough to own it.
