I literally don’t have enough superlatives to describe this set; from the beautifully matched rosewood veneer of the table top to the siimple curved form of Vodder’s solid rosewood 430 chairs this set exudes class, elegance and refinement. It’s believed the 430 chairs were designed specifically for the model 201 table and that belief is echoed in how the proportion of the chairs exactly match the table to allow 5 to fit along each side of the extended table with one each at either end that fit within the alcove created by the tripod supporting legs. This also follows through with the proportional balance of each extension leaf so that with one removed it still allows 10 place settings and even in its smallest unextended state will still seat 8. If you research the table and chairs you will find that it is very rare indeed to find the table as here with its full complement of 12 matching chairs.

The 430 chairs are in their original condition and have clearly been very well looked after over the years. As far as I can tell they feature the original soft black leather upholstery and whilst they do have some small marks and knocks to the leather seat pads and the wooden frames, just as you would expect, they remain in very good vintage condition. They are constructed from solid Rio rosewood and as such each chair is unique in its own right and features slightly different patterns of graining and colour. This ranges from straighter to more curved grain figuring to differences in colour from darker brown to more red, orange and golden tones; which is of course the nature of all vintage Rio rosewood furniture.

The table and both extending leaves have clearly at some point in their life been meticulously restored. This is evidenced by the fact the surface is in fine condition and the colour of the leaves exactly match the colour of the main table top where so often the main top is faded with use and UV exposure over the years. The table is therefore also in very good vintage condition with a few small marks and knocks to the top and legs again just as you would expect. It has beautiful grain figuring that not only matches along the top of the main table but is also perfectly matched in each extension leaf. In addition, the leaves can be stored inside the table when not in use as the there are two shelves under the main top set within the supporting structure. The table is marked under the main top with the model 201 number, the Sibast label and the date of production of 1959 (as shown in the photos) making it one of the earliest production models produced by Sibast.

This dining set is perfect for a large dining room or for a sophisticated office or conference room setting and is highly adaptable by the use of the extension leaves enabling it to be adjusted to your space. It’s stylish and practical and offers both poise and perfect balance in a way that reaffirms what a master craftsman Vodder was.

Arne Vodder
Arne Vodder originally trained as both an architect and cabinetmaker and completed his studies under Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He started his own architecture and design studio alongside architect Anton Borg in 1950 producing beautifully designed high end furniture for a number of key Danish Mid-century manufacturers. Most notably he worked with Sibast, a Danish cabinetmaking firm started in 1908 by Peder Olsen Sibast, and is best known for his sculptural chairs and striking sideboards produced in both teak and rosewood. Vodder represented the 2nd generation of great Danish furniture designers and was particularly active during the 60’s and 70’s. His pieces are instantly recognisable to anyone with an eye for Mid-century Modern design: often simple in form his work projects both strength and elegance as well as an occasional foray into asymmetry and playfulness.
