Very rare Bauhaus style chrome and brown saddle leather cantilever chair designed by Heinrich Pfalzberger.
 
The Rondo cantilever chair by Heinrich Pfalzberger, and manufactured by Pfalzberger Design in Basel, is an excellent example of 1960s Swiss design. It has many elements in common with the most iconic Bauhaus cantilever tubular chairs designed by Breuer and Van der Rohe but also manages to stamp its own unique nature on the style. Most notably this is shown in the backwards rake of the seat that seems to be set at an almost impossible angle for a cantilever chair!
 
The whole aspect of the cantilever was designed to replace the traditional format of a seat supported by four legs. This was very much the ethos of the Bauhaus style that both challenged conformity and enabled the use of more modern materials such as tubular steel; as such the cantilever works by utilising the very nature of the strength of steel as well as it’s ability to flex without breaking. That said, it can only work within set parameters in that the seat is most usually placed at a right angle to the cantilever base to provide strength and balance. And that’s where this chair stands out as an exciting variation on the theme.
 
Here we can see that Pfalzberger has used a series of tube sections that have been cleverly designed to be bolted together to create a series of angles; which in turn provides the strength to oppose the cantilever’s flexing. As such he has been able to create a much steeper angle for the seat to produce a more relaxed sitting position. You’ll never see another cantilever chair quite like this and in fact the only other lounge chair that has the same angle of seat recline is Breuer’s Wassily chair, but you’ll note that this is supported by a cubed cradle rather than a cantilever.    
 
It’s a beautifully comfortable and stylish chair that is also in very good vintage condition, with marks and patina in the leather commensurate with age and use.
