Mid Century Modern Danish oak 4 seater dining set dating from around 1964 by Børge Mogensen for Fredericia Stolefabrik 
 
The set features a solid oak shaker style square table with an offset base and 4 oak and leather chairs, all in a smoked oak finish. Mogensen created many shaker style tables but this is perhaps the rarest as the legs form a central square pedestal that are supported by lateral offset base supports. This creates a unique design perspective as it allows the chairs to be stored under the table in a more interesting off-centre shape. Of course in use the chairs would be used in their central position to the table and it’s part of the clever design of the table that the lateral supports to do not interfere with the central seating position.
 
The top has an open grain varnished finish and is constructed of oak planks that vary in colour and grain. This again creates an interesting visual perspective as it means the top changes in colour from darker to lighter shades of oak as you move around the table.
 
I can’t say if the Børge Mogensen BM73 chairs were designed with this table in mind but they are an ideal fit in both colour and size, and also perfectly match the clean lined, linear style of the table. The proportions are perfect as when the chairs are tucked under the arms lie directly in line with the edge of the table. Constructed in solid oak the chairs are both stylish and comfortable with soft dark mahogany coloured leather upholstery. The addition of the exposed finger joints on the arms also adds interest and reinforces the build quality of the chairs which were originally produced in the early 60’s by P. Lauritsen and Son and later by Fredericia.
 
Both the table and chairs are presented in excellent vintage condition with minor wear to the frames and top commensurate with age. The leather upholstery is also in excellent condition with no major marks to speak of.
