Exceptional Danish vintage Mid century console table by Arne Vodder for Sibast
Originally designed as a serving table this piece has a black melamine inset circle designed for a serving dish of hot food to be placed on to serve guests at the dining table. In essence therefore it was a functional serving piece but I wouldn’t suggest placing hot plates on such a perfect table now! Most likely this would still be used as a functional table in a dining room or as a console table in an entrance way as it benefits from 4 draws for storage that feature beautiful dovetail joints. But it would equally be at home in a lounge or even a bedroom space and the black melamine circle would be a perfect frame for a bronze or glass sculptural piece.
The curved detailing on the draw top edge is instantly recognisable as one of Vodder’s key design elements and what sets him apart as one of the foremost Danish designers of the 20th Century. Without question this is one of the most stunning representations of his work and this design as I’ve never seen this console table made from such exceptionally figured wood that just glows with detail and warm vibrancy when lit. Overall it’s in very good vintage condition, commensurate with age and use, with a few marks to the top and a few notches here and there on the frame as detailed in the photos; none of which detract from the presence of the piece. This table also benefits from having the original makers labels set inside one of the draws as shown.
