A truly rare and beautiful 1960’s vintage Italian Studio Del Campo Vintage bronze, glass and iridescent purple enamel spherical vase.
The four future founders of Studio Del Campo began in studio glazing in the monastery of Ligugé in 1945 and in 1951 attended the Free Academy in Turin – and here they stayed and created most of their work under the collaborative name of ‘Del Campo’ from 1956-1998. During this time they were known to have worked with designers Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass and architect Toni Cordero.
‘Del Campo’ is however, the name with which all the 4 artists: Virgilio Bari, Lidya Lanfranconi, White Tuninetto Chiambretti and Euclid Chiambretti, signed their work. They produced exceptional pieces of studio art and most notably collaborated with the gallery Sextant in Milan.
The main characteristic of their work was the extreme precision of the finish; and in this they experimented with bronze, copper and silver leaf under glazes as well as searching for new designs and new forms. This is evidenced in this vase which has an extraordinary depth of colour where the iridescent finish comes alive when placed under lighting, as can be seen in the photos. Under different lights and angles it can appear deep purple with hints of gold, but can also has a warmer tone with a more red to copper glow too.
It’s a solid form with a decent size and uses a heavy bronze base to create stability. As such it’s safely maintained its condition over the years with just a few small marks here and there commensurate with age and use.
