Beautiful limed oak hand carved antique French style armoire with bubble glass doors by Oly Design.
 
San Francisco Bay designers Kaye McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger have gained an enviable reputation for designing stand out high end furniture via their Oly Design studio for over 20 years. They use contemporary finishes and materials to reinvent traditional designs and have evolved their own brand of furniture which they describe as ‘casual elegance’.
 
The Delphine Armoire is a perfect example of this. The limed finish gives the impression of a driftwood appearance that is at once both contemporary, in the use of materials, but also instantly recognisable as echoing traditional antique forms and craftsmanship. The sinuous hand carved door panels feature a decorative bubble glass resin insert; these open to reveal 3 curved shelves that can be adjusted to various heights. The feet of an armoire are its weakest point and this can lead to damage of the joints when rotating it into an upright position after delivery, as with any heavy item. The metal base has therefore been designed with this in mind and is an example of how a modern redesign of an antique form can become more enduring and practical. 
 
This version of the Oly Delphine is larger than their current models and is presented in very good used condition. It does have some marks and some variance in finish here and there but it’s difficult to know if this is caused by general use or was in fact intended by the designers to give the armoire it’s driftwood appearance. There are no major chips or scratches in the wood or resin inserts.
 
It is a very adaptable piece of furniture and although intended for use in a bedroom it would (as shown in the photos) be equally at home as a centrepiece in a lounge, kitchen or reception room setting.
