A Danish Mid Century teak Reolsystem wall shelving unit by Kai Kristiansen for FM (Feldballes Møbelfabrik)
Originally designed in 1957 this is FM’s most successful design and proved to be a huge success with sales throughout Europe and the US. This modular shelving system was made in both teak and rosewood and came in a variety of add-on units and shelves to suit ones need.
On this basis buyers would often start with a few ‘strings’ (long metal support wall brackets) , units and shelves and then add to it as they required. And even though these are vintage items that can still be done now as the sizes are universal to the system so you can buy additional vintage pieces to expand your set at a later date.
Needless to say Kai Kristiansen was one of the greats of Danish mid century design and is famous for producing not only shelving units but most notably a superbly designed series of chairs as well as dining sets, lounge chairs, sofas and sideboards. As such his designs are much sought after and also readily available for you to buy either to add more units to this system or to compliment it with other items from his design range.
This particular Reolsystem is in good vintage condition with only minor marks here and there commensurate with age and features 3 metal support strings, 10 shelves, 1 writing desk with two integral draws and 6 of the original teak and metal book ends. The metal strings do show signs of use as you would expect and are currently painted in a light grey. However, it is very easy to spray these if you wanted to match your wall colour.
