Large abstract 2.35m multi-media painting by Martin Smida – entitled ‘The Oarsmen’ 
 
This large and impressive figurative abstract art piece has a surrealist feel that is suggested by the figures and setting. It's an eye catching piece by famous steampunk designer, sculptor and artist Martin Smida features an unusual tapered canvas to give the impression of perspective.
 
It’s multi-media construction includes acrylics and newspaper that combine together to create a landscape of texture and colour presented in hues of grey, browns and blue. The main subject of the piece is the four Oarsmen that give the artwork its title. The subject of the Oarsmen is open to interpretation but with their chimney like heads spewing fumes into the sky as they power themselves over a sea of newspaper cuttings it is maybe a commentary on Global pollution and climate change?
 
The piece is signed by the artist lower left as shown in the photos and dated 1989. It is in good vintage condition with just minor marks to the canvas and sides. There is also some variation in texture and colour in the main piece but it’s impossible to know if this is intended markings by the artist or not - either way it does not affect the impact of the artwork and subject matter.
 
The size is 235cm overall in width with a height that tapers from 140cm on the right down to 91cm on the left.
 
It’s a powerful, brooding and thought provoking statement piece and would be a talking point in any setting.
