This is the Grand Daddy of all of Arne Vodder’s standalone desks that features the full complement of seven fully extending draws. As such it is a rare and beautiful beast that is also built like a tank with a sturdy structure joined by stainless steel bolts – an unusual design detail for Vodder, but a stroke of genius as the exposed hex bolts end up forming part of the appeal of the design. The stainless steel detailing is also then carried through to the drawer handles which have a simple geometric form and are hinged so as to fold upwards when used.

It has a really striking presence that exudes strength and integrity, which is of course why this Executive desk stands out in its class. It also looks impressive from any angle so if you are looking for a free standing desk to sit centre stage in a room it definitely fits the bill. It’s presented in good vintage condition with a few knocks and marks and with a little sun fading to the table top and legs, just as you would expect, but nothing at all that detracts from its appeal. It is in untouched vintage condition and could of course be polished more, but it has such a natural and even vintage look I considered it was best to leave it in its found condition.

The desk benefits from having the original locks with a pair of keys, as shown – and both locks, whilst being a little stiff as you would expect, are in working order.

Sibast and Vodder
Sibast Furniture began as a cabinetmaker in 1908 on the island of Funen in Denmark. Peder Olsen Sibast soon gained a reputation for creating beautifully crafted furniture using simplicity and sustainability as his benchmarks. He passed his ethos and skills to his son Helge who not only continued the family business but helped it grow into one of the most highly acclaimed furniture producers in Denmark. Pivotal to this growth was Helge’s collaboration with Arne Vodder who started designing for the company in the mid 50s. Together they created some of the most enduring and sought after Danish Mid century designs of the 20th Century that catapulted Sibast into the limelight of furniture design on a Worldwide stage.

This desk is the epitome of the values that both upheld during that time; an ethos of practical use combined with simple but also captivating aesthetic form – and this in turn was complimented by Sibast’s well-earned reputation for sublime, high quality craftsmanship.
