Vintage Mid Century brown leather club chairs and coffee table by Walter Knoll.
 
Produced by Walter Knoll in the 1960’s this set consists of 4 leather club/lounge chairs and a leather clad, glass topped coffee table. All in all they are in very good vintage condition given they are around 50 years old. I’ve purposely left them as I found them as I personally prefer my furniture to show it’s age and history. On this basis there is some minor wear to the leather on the chairs, some marks on the woodwork and some scratches on the glass table top (the latter is difficult to show in pictures because of the reflections). The only real major mark is to one arm of one chair (as shown in one of the pictures) which presumably was made by someone of a nervous disposition and a sharp wrist watch! However, all of these are easily remedied if you’re of a mind to do so as the wooden frames are solid wood so can be easily sanded and the glass top could be replaced if required – the set has therefore been priced with this in mind.
 
They would work well in a lounge setting or maybe in a home cinema seating area as they are both supportive and comfortable. Alternatively they would work well in an eclectic office reception area as their cubist form is very ‘Mad Men’ in style. You'll also see from the pictures that they can be set out together in a number of configurations to suit the space available.
 
Walter Knoll as a company has a long and distinguished history in designing and producing high end luxury furniture. Originally started by Wilhelm Knoll in 1865 in Stuttgart, Germany the company later changed hands to his sons Willy and Walter in 1907. Walter then started his own design company in 1925 and became one of the first companies to start specialising in Bauhaus designed furniture. Always at the cutting edge Walter worked with many of the greatest designers of the time including Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier and after the company was devastated by the 2nd World War he began rebuilding it again in 1945. In 1985, Walter Knoll & Co. took over the Wilhelm Knoll Company, with the latter’s designs continuing to be produced as the “Wilhelm Knoll Collection. In 2007 the company became a fully international concern opening showrooms in London, Paris, Mumbai, and Beijing. In 2015, the company celebrated its 150-year anniversary.
 
Walter Knoll’s vintage pieces depict a wide variety of design styles and aesthetics. They are always beautifully crafted and meticulously detailed making them sought after by collectors and designers alike. This set is no exception and you’ll find that it’s actually very rare to find a set like this for sale anywhere on the internet or at auction.
