A classic Danish Mid Century Børge Mogensen 2204 Oxide red leather and teak Wing Back Armchair for Fredericia Furniture.
Designed in 1963, the 2204 Wing Back Armchair is part of Børge Mogensen’s 2200 Series for Fredericia, which also includes matching two and three seat sofas, an easy chair, and the 2202 footstool. The series began in 1962 with the first sofas and has since become a fixture in embassies, cabinet offices, commercial environments and private homes.
The 2204 is defined by its tall, upholstered back with gently flared wings, designed to support the head and shoulders while shielding the sitter from draughts and distractions. Mogensen’s approach here blends Danish Modern clarity with historic influence; drawing on the enclosed comfort of British Victorian and Edwardian armchairs, but stripping away ornamentation in favour of clean proportions and expert upholstery. The result is a chair equally suited to formal or relaxed settings, and one that has been built to endure in both structure and style.
Despite being designed over 60 years ago the 2204 is still produced today and currently retails for around £6,500 - £10,500 depending on finish. Incidentally, the “22” series numbering has no symbolic meaning as it was simply an internal Fredericia designation, used to group related designs within Mogensen’s range.
This particular chair dates from the 1980s and is presented in very good vintage condition with only minor wear commensurate with age and use - it also benefits from having the original Fredericia production label on the base as shown in the pictures. The colour is known as 'Oxide Red' and was a favourite amongst many Mid Century designers including Poul Kjaerholm, Arne Vodder and Kaare Klint.
Børge Mogensen
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of the key figures in Danish Modern design and Fredericia’s founding house designer. Trained as a cabinet-maker, he studied at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Danish Academy under Kaare Klint. Mogensen believed in “democratic design” which he defined as well-made, functional furniture for everyday use - which then combined traditional craftsmanship with modern production techniques.
His designs, including the Spanish Chair (1958), J39 People’s Chair (1947), and the 2200 Series, are now considered classics. Mogensen worked closely with Fredericia’s owner Andreas Graversen from 1955 until his death, creating furniture noted for its honesty, simplicity, and enduring quality.
Fredericia
Founded in 1911 in Fredericia, Denmark, Fredericia Stolefabrik (also known as Fredericia Furniture), first became recognised for producing high-quality traditional furniture. In 1955, under Andreas Graversen’s leadership, the company began collaborating with Børge Mogensen, producing designs that combined craftsmanship with modernist principles.
Today, Fredericia remains family-owned, producing in Denmark and maintaining its commitment to long-lasting, sustainable furniture. The brand’s archive includes Mogensen’s classics alongside works by Nanna Ditzel, Hans J. Wegner, and contemporary designers such as Jasper Morrison and Barber Osgerby.
