Mid Century Svend Aage Madsen Walnut and Teak side chair.

Unfortunately very little is known about Danish designer Svend Åge Madsen. Most of the information comes from catalogues and inventory lists of the time and this shows us that whilst some of his designs date from the late 1950s, the overwhelming majority of Madsen’s furniture was designed and produced in the 1960s.

He was known to have worked with a number of Danish manufacturers and cabinetmakers including H.P and Sigurd Hansen, K. Knudsen and Son and NB Mobelfabrik and his design work epitomised the Danish modern style. Although his designs were never mainstream he is most famous for his desks and favoured the warmth of teak, walnut and rosewood in his work. His design style featured minimal decorative detail and instead he concentrated on angles, slopes and arches to create easy flowing organic silhouettes.

Much of this is evidenced in the this chair which has a simple form constructed in Walnut that is then lifted out of the ordinary by the angled golden teak back supports. This not only makes the chair comfortable to sit in but also pleasing to look at. It’s presented in good vintage condition with a few marks to the frame commensurate with age and use. It also features the original upholstery that has no major stains and no holes or tears in the fabric.

It has an understated elegance and would work well as a dressing table or desk chair, or as an accent or side chair.
