Vintage Hille Meridio posturepedic chair designed by Michael Dye.

Hille was founded in 1906 by Russian emigrant, Salamon Hille and has a long and distinguished history in British furniture design. Perhaps most famous for its association with designer Robin Day who worked with the company for over 20 years, the  brand has produced may designs and worked with numerous designers including Charles Eames, Fred Scott and Michael Dye. The latter two were instrumental in the creation of the Meridio chair with Dye using Scott’s Supporto chair as the inspiration for the new chair created in 1990.

It’s an odd chair, of that there is no doubt! Looking like a cross between something you would see on an Alien film set and an object of carnal delight found in Mr Grey’s cellar it’s certainly not for everyone. It is however, strangely beautiful and this particular item is perhaps the best version of the chair you’ll ever see with virtually unmarked black upholstery set against the polished aluminium. It’s also very functional as it was designed to offer a medically correct seating position when working at a desk and with the rocking base also allowing fluid to move around the spine with a gentle rocking action. Needless to say that makes it feel like you’ve been strapped into a contraption created by Mrs Doubtfire when you first sit in it, but then anything that informs you of the failings in your posture always feels relatively uncomfortable at first.

Aside from that it is a striking and unusual object in itself and enjoys that typically anglophile tradition of making a feature of the engineered knobs and junctures, rather than the more international approach where joints are hidden away – it’s certainly a talking point…
