Danish Mid century rosewood and glass two tier coffee or side table designed by Henning Norgaard for Komfort Mobler, 1960s.

Unfortunately Henning Norgaard, despite many searches, is one of those designers who remains largely unknown. There’s no question he was Danish, and he was believed to be primarily an artist that also dabbled with design; and what a shame he didn’t do more!

Of the designs that are attributed to him there is a beautiful set of cutlery called ‘Eton’ that was made by Raadvad and used at the Danish Royal Court, and this stunning little modernist table produced by Komfort.

Komfort were known for making classic ‘Scandinavian modern’ pieces by well-known Danish architects and designers including Sven Ellekaer, Arne Wahl Iversen, and Ole Wanscher. Their catalogue included numerous chairs, tables and upholstered sofas and loungers.

Their work was precise and always carried out to a high standard; as can be seen on this table. The beautifully constructed jointing work is held together by recessed bolts which means the whole table can be very easily deconstructed and flat packed. This was very much part of the Danish design ethos in the 60’s where the greatest market for Danish furniture, outside of Europe, was actually in America. On this basis, with Ikea also going this route in Sweden, manufacturers like Komfort were shipping furniture in their component parts to be sold and then reassembled overseas.

What’s truly compelling about the design is how fine and slight the structure is, which gives it an almost unreal quality – it exists in the space, but is at the same time barely visible. And, in a funny way, it’s almost like the designer himself. No doubt it’s exactly as he intended and married to the light and airy modernist lines it creates a beautiful silhouette.

The table is in wonderful vintage condition throughout with only very light marks to the wooden frame as expected – the original manufacturer’s label remains still affixed to the base as shown in the pictures.

This particular table also benefits from two tiers of glass shelving, which I’ve never seen before. I think there’s no doubt the glass has been replaced as it’s in virtually ‘as new’ condition, and I guess whoever did that added the 2nd tier; and honestly, it’s a stroke of genius… IMO not only does it not affect the aesthetic, but it enhances it whilst also adding additional storage – it may not be strictly original but if you want to be purist about it you can just simply throw the bottom bit of glass away if you want to and imagine it was never there in the first place!

Just a wonderful little table that remains as one of my favourite Danish coffee tables of all time.
