A set of 5 original vintage 1960s Charles and Ray Eames, Herman Miller DSX chairs with ivory coloured fibreglass shells upholstered in charcoal black Hopsack.

The Eames DSX Chair was part of the original Eames fiberglass series that was designed in the early 1950s. The abbreviation stood for Dining (D) Side Chair (S) on X Base. The X part of the Eames DSX Side Chair name refers to the original base shape as it was initially designed; as such it had an X criss-cross pattern on the part that connects to the seat top. This was then replaced by the H base in 1954 which was a more resilient and versatile fitment which lasted through the generations of shells in years ahead. The DSX name was, however, kept the same even after the change from X to H base.
 
It’s interesting to note that whilst it was essentially produced as a dining chair (as the name denotes) it was often specified in office and commercial settings. This was because it was not only a comfortable chair to sit in but also durable and hard wearing. 
 
Originally produced with fibreglass shells they were also available with a removable hopsack covers designed by Alexander Girard, and with permanent upholstery too on later models. Both the shell and upholstery were available in a broad range of colours and although the shell was later changed to a plastic structure (as available today) the hopsack upholstery remains.
 
It is possible to find early X base versions of these with the original first edition feet, called the ‘domes of silence’. Most of the early 50’s versions can be found with these rubber boot glides before Herman Miller progressed to the white nylon self-levelling glides in the 1960s that are still used today. 
 
These chairs are presented in very good condition and are as good a set of vintage DSXs as you’ll ever find. There is no major fading, holes, marks or thread pulls on the upholstery and all the plastic feet are present and correct (often one or two are missing in action). The fibreglass shells and the chrome frames are also in very good condition with no damages to the shell and no rust or flaking of the chrome. Finally, all the chairs benefit from the original Herman Miller label affixed to the base, as shown in the photos.
