Super Ellipse table designed by Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson for Fritz Hansen + 8 stacking chairs.

A rare version of the Super Ellipse table constructed from laminated Beech wood. This version, (fully labelled and stamped underneath) was produced in 1985 and is particularly rare as it features solid Beech legs as opposed to chrome or steel. The legs are very clever as they simply clip in and out of their locating points at each corner which means that the table can be easily disassembled if required to be moved or stored.

It’s a stunning main centrepiece to a dining room or kitchen but also very useful if you have a small space and need a table stored away for dinner parties, or need an extra table for Xmas.

It’s paired with 8 Magnus Olsen Danish stacking chairs which are a perfect fit with the wood and colour of the table as they constructed of solid Beech wood backs and blue upholstery. The contour of the chairs not only make them comfortable to sit in but also match the simple elliptical curves of the table form. Because the chairs easily stack the table could be used with either 4, 6 or, at a push, 8 chairs as shown in the photos.

Overall the set is in very good condition given the vintage table is 33 years old. However there are some small marks in the table top (detailed in the photos using a £1 coin as a scale reference for size) and a few small marks on the chairs with a very light small stain on one that I could not actually get to show up in a photo. Having said that these marks are not that visible when looking at the table and chairs as a whole as opposed to focusing on the marks themselves. It has been priced with this in mind and if you do compare the price of this set with anything you’ll find on the internet in this design you will find that the set is very well priced overall.

The concept of the Super Ellipse table goes back to the Danish mathematician and philosopher Piet Hein who used a mathematical model to design the table top. It is therefore constructed in such a way that every sitter has an advantageous link to the table form between an ellipse and rectangle, making maximum use of the dimensions of the table. It was originally designed in 1968 in conjunction with two of the most famous Danish designers in history, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen. Then, as now, it is produced by Fritz Hansen who still continue produce this high quality table in a range of sizes and tops – but no longer produce it with solid wooden legs.

This table is the largest version of the kind produced without the use of extension leaves, this is why it was produced in laminate rather than solid wood which could have bowed over the years.
