A rare vintage ‘hockey’ stick design compact dining set created by Kerstin Bartlmaefor for Casala featuring a separate glass top and 4 stacking chairs.

A very unusual dining set designed by Scandinavian designer, Kerstin Bartlmaefor for Casala that is believed to date from 1990s. It is a very compact set that presumably, by virtue of the original table top size, was designed more as a games, or casual coffee table than as a dining set – so if you have a tight space, this is the dining set for you!

The set now features a detachable glass top, as a later addition, that simply sits on small rubber feet on top of the original table to increase the useable size; thereby creating a dining table for 4 people. This means that if required, the whole set can be stacked away when not in use, as shown in the pictures.

The name derives from the shape of the seat backs which feature a hockey stick style shape and curve – and that’s not just an aesthetic detail (although it is pretty cool), but a practical one too. Kerstin apparently designed the chairs with only one supporting arm and a cutaway so that she could sit backwards on the chair like a cowboy even in a tight skirt whilst still maintaining her decorum and respectability. It’s a great idea and back story and whether you intend to sit like this or not, it makes no actual difference to the comfort of the ergonomically designed seat and back.

The set is in good vintage condition with some light marks to the top and bases of the table and chairs commensurate with age and use.

20th Century Design Soft Furnishings Policy

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989 and 1993) state that all soft furnishings holding foam must conform to BS5852 standards. This means that any post-1988 furniture will need to bear a fire label for auction and 2nd hand sale purposes.

The following exceptions apply:
• Items constructed pre-1950 [Regulation 4(a)]
• Items being sold to someone who is in the business of reupholstering furniture [See Regulation 4[b] and Consumer Protection Act 1987, s.46(7)]
• Items being sold to someone who is in the business of dealing in
furniture [Regulation 14(1)]
• Items being sold that will not be used in a domestic setting in the UK e.g. for export, for use in a museum or theatre, as a work of art [Regulation 3(1a) and 4(c)]
