An extraordinary hand crafted Vintage French leather strap sofa with upholstered bench seat and bespoke sheepskin throw.

This is an extremely unusual and beautifully designed hand crafted sofa constructed from leather straps over a welded wire frame. Each strap is woven within a lattice design and then connected to the frame with twine. As you can see from the later stripped back photos, this creates a low, self-supporting structure that whilst sturdy, is naturally pretty uncomfortable to sit on.
 
The next creative step therefore, has been the addition of a foam padded upholstered bench seat that sits separately above the sofa structure (as also shown in the later photos). This not only helps to provide support and comfort but also increases the seat height to make it easier to get up from. The bench stands on four legs that are simply located through the holes in the leather lattice. As such, and because the bench seat is also hinged at the back, it can be moved backwards and forwards to create a more upright, or more relaxed seating position.  
 
Finally, a six skin long-haired sheepskin throw has been cut to size to fit perfectly over the entire seating area. This throw drapes over the front and back of the seating area and tucks around the sides of the bench and into the recess between the back and main seat – as such it requires no additional straps to hold it in place. 
 
It’s believed to be French and dates from the 1970s, although who designed it and made it is a mystery. In any event it’s clear that it’s been beautifully made and very carefully constructed from component parts that combine together to create a truly striking and unusual sofa.    
 
It is in overall very good condition vintage condition with the leather straps showing patina and marks commensurate with age and use. The metal frame is in original condition and almost certainly the upholstered bench and sheepskin throw are more recent additions rather than original.
