Dating from the mid 1980’s this is a truly rare and beautiful example of a complete Boardroom set that would have graced the offices of numerous powerhouse firms such as IBM throughout the 80’s and 90’s. It features a large oval mid grey and walnut edged table top set on a classic Eames segmented chrome and black base. It’s badged as Herman Miller at one end on the underside of the top but also has an impression above it that details it as H4B – as shown in the photos. I have never seen a Herman Miller table top like this before as usually the tops are more rectangular in shape. I can therefore only assume by reference to the number, letters and badge that it was a bespoke edition. It is in very good vintage condition with only minor marks here and there commensurate with age and use. I cannot tell you what the top surface is made of but it appears to be self coloured as it shows minor marks in the surface but the marks show no other colour underneath.
 
It's matched to 10 original dark grey leather Herman Miller aluminium swivel base soft pad chairs with impressed marks in the base – the dark grey leather adds to their rarity. The soft pad chair is an icon of 20th Century design and is still produced today as it remains as one of the most comfortable office task chairs you’ll ever sit in. The chairs were offered for purchase with or without arms and suited different purposes. The chairs with arms were generally used as desk chairs but the chairs without arms were more used for conference and meeting room settings as one can slide in and out of them more easily. They are in well used condition as can be evidenced from the photos. As such they have age related marks, a few dents in the seat, little knocks on the corners, creases and wear but overall this results in a general patina that adds to their appeal – they clearly have a history, but show it well. The polished aluminium bases are in very good condition for their age with just minor scuffing and light scratches and knocks but with no tarnish and naturally, as they are cast Aluminium, no signs of rust.
 
If you’re looking for an impressive and classic Boardroom or meeting room table and chairs set then look no further. The obvious vintage nature of the set immediately adds gravitas and age to any setting that new mass produced furniture would never come close to. It would also work well as a funky, more industrial style home dining set.
