Bauhaus dining set featuring 4 Mart Stam cantilever chairs in black leather and chrome and an original Thonet cream melamine topped and chrome table – circa 1960’s.
 
This is an excellent modernist dining set that has a sophisticated appeal created by the simple marriage of the cream table top set against the black leather of the chairs. This is further enhanced by how the sinuous curved chrome frames of the table and cantilever chair frames complement each other.
 
The Thonet table has a pressure treated melamine cream top that is in excellent condition for its age. The curved chrome four leg base is very reminiscent of the La Fonda design by Eames and is a perfect match for the Stam chairs. It very comfortably seats 4 but would also accommodate 6 at a push.
 
The set of four Mart Stam chairs are 20th Century icons and were originally designed by him in 1927 – in fact these are believed to be the first mass produced cantilevered chairs in furniture history. Stam, along with his contemporaries Marcel Breuer and Ludwig van der Rohe, experimented with the principle of cantilevered chairs as early as 1925. The extra strength given in the manufacturing process by steel tube is what enables the design to work and became a turning point in the history of modern furniture design.
 
The four chairs are presented in very good vintage condition with the chrome and leather showing light signs of wear commensurate with age. They come complete with all the floor glides for the chair bases and also feature the double adjustable arc chrome supports that tension the chair beneath the seat; these are what separate the original German production models from the later chairs produced in Italy in the latter part of the 20th Century. One of the original German production labels is evident under one chair and the Thonet table also benefits from the maker’s original label. 
 
This set would work equally as well as a funky office meeting table.
