Vintage office table and chairs in chrome, black fabric and leather by Geoffrey D. Harcourt for Artifort.

Geoffrey D. Harcourt trained at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1962 he started work for Artifort  and his designs introduced Artifort to the international market for contract design. His first design for Artifort, the 042 series in 1963, was an immediate international success. His philosophy is that the chair should focus on the person and not the other way around. “First the person, then the chair.” Harcourt has won many prizes and in 1978 was awarded the title of "Royal Designer for Industry".

This set comprises 4 chairs which are a version of the classic F141 office chair but are believed to be early models with the chrome X frame base that were produced before the 141 was finally established with a five star pedestal base (either with or without castors) in the mid 1960s. They are recognised by the arm form and the solid aluminium bar with rounded, bolted ends that creates the support structure. Each chair has leather arms and a leather top back panel complimented by a black weave fabric on the main sections.

They are matched to what is believed to be the original table, or another Artifort variant, as all the items were bought as a set from the previous owners. The set is in good vintage condition with a few marks to the upholstery and chrome frames as you would expect but no holes or tears in the fabric and there are no major rust marks evident on the chrome. The table is a resin/plastic composite and has a number of light scratches and marks on the surface but is entirely in keeping with the vintage nature of the set. I’ve tried to show this in the photos but the table is surface is reflective so it’s difficult to see them. However, they do not detract from the overall appearance as evidenced when you view the set as a whole.

Artifort is one of the oldest established furniture producers in Europe with its roots going back over 125 years to Jules Wagemans when he set up the business as an upholsterer in Maastricht in 1890. His son, Henricus Wagemans, expanded the company into a furniture factory, which had a showroom in Amsterdam by the end of the nineteen twenties and was already well known nationally. In 1928 the new brand name was introduced: Artifort, derived from the Latin word ‘ars’ meaning art or knowledge, and ‘fortis’ meaning strong or powerful. The word ‘comfort’ is also reflected in this brand name.
