Vintage/Retro Mid-Century Ernest Race R57 1965 3 seater fabric and leather sofa.
 
Ernest Race was one of Britain’s most successful and prolific designers and was known for both his furniture and textile designs. He came to the fore after the war when wood was in short supply and created an inventive range of designs under the Governments ‘Utility scheme’ in aluminium and steel. He continued to produce innovative designs until his untimely death at age 51 in 1964.
 
This sofa represents his innovative approach as it was the first design ever for a British produced sofa to have removable covers. This made it popular for contract use as the cushion sets could just be unhooked, unzipped and recovered as required. The sofa was therefore used on a number of cruise liners at the time.
 
This example in black leather and grey Irish tweed fabric is in very good condition save a few small scuffs to the leather here and there. Its low slung, angular form dates back to the late 50's and whilst it is a 3 seater it is compact in size as was often the case with Mid Century sofas.
